The Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County awarded 27 scholarships worth $1,000.00 each to area high school graduates and college students for the 2010-11 academic year. Recipients of the Charity League scholarships were chosen by the Scholarship Committee on the basis of college plans, financial need, grade point average, community involvement and service and recommendations from their high school or college counselors. 

The Dr. Samuel Newman Scholarships awarded to Hunter Knopp and Leslie Simmons. Knopp is the son of Nathan and Karen Knopp of Ridgeway and will attend James Madison University in the fall. Simmons is the daughter of Sheila Woods of Martinsville and will attend Old Dominion University.

The Virginia Walker Hamlet Scholarship were awarded to Keenan France, son of Lloyd and Toni France of Spencer. He will attend the University of Virginia. 

The Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of deceased Charity League members, was awarded to Marina Flick, the daughter of Judy Flick of Collinsville. Flick will attend Wake Forest University. 

The Founders’ Scholarship, first given in 1976 in honor of the Charity League’s charter members, was awarded to Megan Herndon, daughter of Allen and Renee Herndon of Martinsville. Herndon will attend Liberty University.

The Sustainer Scholarship was given to Genevieve Goupil, daughter of Ronald and Laura Goupil of Bassett. Goupil will attend Christopher Newport University.

The Blue Ridge Scholarship was awarded to Zachary Keyser. Keyser is the son of Steven and Joanna Keyser of Martinsville and will attend Lenoir-Rhyne University.

The Adele Pannill Scholarship was awarded to Alysia Lynch, daughter of Troy and Flenory Smith of Axton. She will attend Old Dominion University.

The Catherine Pannill Scholarship was awarded to Steven Spencer, the son of Michelle Spencer of Martinsville. He will attend Emory and Henry College.

The Adele Pannill Carter Charitable Trust Scholarships were awarded to Houston Stutz, Jenna Lawson, Caroline Dionne, and Janika Hunt. Stutz is the son of Randall and Terri Stutz of Bassett and will attend James Madison University. Lawson is the daughter of Brian and Brenda Lawson of Axton and will attend Liberty University. Dionne is the son of Pierre and Vera Dionne of Martinsville and will attend the University of Virginia. Hunt, the daughter of Jimmy and Orlena Hunt of Martinsville, will attend Radford University.

The Charity League awarded eight additional scholarships to Tessa Law, Christina Cahill, Linnie Daniel, Ashley Wright, Shaterra Hairston, Samantha Ngugyen, Anthony Redd, and Rodney Johns Jr. Law is the daughter of Phillip and Jennifer Law of Axton and will attend Radford University. Cahill, daughter of Curtis and Bonnie Cahill of Bassett, will attend Radford University. Daniel, daughter of Tim and Deborah Daniel of Fieldale, will attend Radford University. Wright, daughter of Kenneth and Rachel Wright of Fieldale, will attend the University of Virginia. Hairston, daughter of Terrence Hairston and Cheryl Gravely of Martinsville, will attend Radford University. Nguyen is the daughter of Jeremy Van and Teresa Nguyen of Martinsville and will attend the University of Virginia. Redd, son of Bridget Redd of Ridgeway, will attend Emory and Henry College. Johns, son of Rodney and Tina Johns of Martinsville, will attend Virginia Tech.

The Howard Stone Renewable Scholarship awarded to Margaret Gross. Gross is the daughter of Vee Gross of Martinsville and attends Johnson & Wales University.

The Charity League awarded six additional renewable scholarships to: Sarah Brim, Akrista Harris, Ashley Collins, Jennifer Nutter, Timothy Chacha. Brim is the daughter of Danny Brim of Fieldale and attends Patrick Henry Community College. Harris, daughter of Kenneth and the late Jacqueline Harris of Martinsville, attends Averett University. Collins, daughter of Scott Collins of Martinsville, attends George Mason University. Nutter, daughter of Debra Nutter of Martinsville, attends Jefferson College of Health Sciences. Chacha, son of Regina and John Chacha of Martinsville, attends Liberty University.
