On May 22, 2010, Charity League sponsored its 2nd Annual “It’s for the Kids” 5K run. Runners ranging in age from 10 years old to 67 years old were led by Sheriff Steve Draper through the course which began on Church Street and meandered through Uptown Martinsville. Although the skies were heavily overcast and threatened rain, the bad weather held off just long enough for the last runner to cross the finish line at the Farmer’s Market!

This year’s event was supported by mostly local runners and included 12 runners under the age of 14. Among those who successfully completed the race were Sustainers Tiffany Coleman and Dr. Theresa Bechtel, Dave Meyer (husband of Theresa Bechtel), Win Bassett (son of Sustainer Diane Bassett), Matt and Luke Erikson (husband and son of Past President Nancy Erikson), Hugh Haskins (husband of Active Corinne Haskins) and Nicholas Brunner (son of Senior Valerie Brunner).

We also appreciated the support of runners Makunda Abdul and Laura Frazier (who are both now Provisionals) as well as Laura’s husband, Andrew Hynes.

Many thanks to the members of the Fundraising Committee who worked tirelessly to plan this event, as well as the countless volunteers who helped guide and cheer the runners along the route. The Charity League received compliments from many of the runners that the event was well organized and supported by the organization. The event also could not have been possible without our event sponsors, Activate Martinsville-Henry County, The Eye Site, Dr. James Isernia and Subway, and also our Start/Finish Line and Water Station Sponsors, Hooker Furniture, Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce, Daniel, Medley & Kirby, P.C., River Community Bank, N.A., and Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory.
