Once again the Charity League participated in the Annual TGIF Concert Series. This one was originally
planned for August 28, but rescheduled to October 23 due to the rain. The weather threatened to interfere with
the event once again so the decision was made to move it to the farmers’ market and what a great move that was! The location was perfect; the setting fit the purpose with a covered stage area for the musicians and ticket tables. The crowd seemed bigger maybe due to the upcoming race the same weekend. Everyone had a great time dancing and listening to the music by the ‘Band of Oz’. Music selection included many hits of the ‘70s and ‘80s including a musical tribute to Michael Jackson.

“The Band of Oz was formed in 1967 as a part-time band playing fraternity parties and high school proms all over the South. In 1977 the band went on the road full time. Since that time the band has made an exceptional name for itself throughout the Southeast by playing the top clubs and corporate parties, and getting excellent reviews along the way. For several years the group has been a guest on most of the major beach concerts in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia.”

TGIF celebrates its 15th Birthday this year. The Outdoor Concert Series was established in 1994 as a way to bring people Uptown. Over the years the concerts have brought thousands of people uptown and attendance continually increases every year. Martinsville Uptown Revitalization Association is the organizer of the series.
Charity League has worked this event for several years now with two objectives in mind – community event participation and making extra $$ for our budget. The primary job is to sell tickets at the door, check IDs
for buying alcohol, sell beer tickets and work soda and beer tents. With the increased number of members this
year the Charity League was able to work the event with ease splitting the number of members in two shifts.
Thanks to all who came and especially to those who worked the extra hours!
