The Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County recently awarded 27 scholarships worth $1,000.00 each
to area high school graduates and college students. The Charity League, established in 1931, strives to promote
growth and development of children throughout Martinsville and Henry County through education and health programs.

The Dr. Samuel Newman Scholarships were awarded to Sarah Brim and Jennifer Nutter. These scholarships were given in 1976 in honor of the late Dr. Samuel Newman of Danville, who conducted pediatric clinics in Martinsville in the late 1930’s. Brim is the daughter of Danny Brim of Fieldale and will attend Patrick Henry Community College in the fall. Nutter is the daughter of Debra Nutter of Martinsville and plans to attend Jefferson College of Health Sciences. Timothy Chacha, son of Regina and John Chacha of Martinsville, received the Virginia Walker Hamlet Scholarship. He will attend Liberty University. The Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of deceased Charity League members, was awarded to Jamie Walters, the son of Cloresa and Briant Turner of Martinsville. Walters will attend Virginia Tech. The Founders’ Scholarship, first given in 1976 in honor of the Charity League’s charter members, was awarded to Caroleigh Newman, daughter of Linda and Leon Newman of Martinsville. Newman plans to attend Bridgewater College.

The Sustainer Scholarship was given to Juelyan Via, son of Randall Via of Martinsville. Via will attend Virginia Tech in the fall. Melvin Eanes received the Blue Ridge Scholarship. Eanes is the son of Cindy Eanes of Martinsville and plans to attend Virginia Tech. The Adele Pannill Scholarship was awarded to Robert Edmonds, son of Judy and Richard Edmonds of Collinsville. He will attend James Madison University. Hannah Kassebaum, the daughter of Maria and James Ayers of Martinsville, received the Catherine Pannill Scholarship. She plans to attend the University of Mary Washington.

The Adele Pannill Carter Charitable Trust Scholarships were awarded to Ashley Collins, Seth Martin, Ethan Guebert, and Tyler Ratliff. Collins is the daughter of Scott Collins of Martinsville and will attend Patrick Henry Community College in the fall. Martin is the son of Bonnie and Steven Martin of Ridgeway and plans to attend Longwood University. Guebert is the son of Tracy and Scott Guebert of Martinsville and will attend Roanoke College. Ratliff, the son of Betty Sue Seay of Bassett, will attend Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Charity League awarded 11 additional scholarships to: Ashley Flippen, Taylor Harrison, Amanda Scott, James Turner, Shan’tyia Hairston, Sherria Fuller, Amber Hairston, Kristin Moorefield, Ian Dillard, Margaret Gross and Ericka Hairston. Flippen, the daughter of Barbie Flippen of Martinsville, will attend Patrick Henry Community College. Harrison is the daughter of Myrta and Richard Harrison of Fieldale and will attend James Madison University. Scott is the daughter of Sheila Scott of Collinsville and also will be attending James Madison University. Turner is the son of Patricia and Charles Turner of Bassett. He plans to attend Liberty University in the fall. Shan’tyia Hairston is the daughter of Shirley Hairston of Axton and will attend Guilford College. Fuller is the daughter of Phala and James Fuller of Martinsville. She plans to attend Norfolk State University in the fall. Amber Hairston, the daughter of Lisa Hairston of Martinsville, will attend Old Dominion University. Moorefield plans to attend Radford University and is the daughter of Melissa and Jeff Walker of Martinsville. Dillard, the son of Donna and Joe Dillard of Martinsville, will attend the University of Virginia this fall. Gross, the daughter of Vee Gross of Martinsville plans to attend Johnson Wales in Charlotte. Ericka Hairston, the daughter of Hilda Hairston of Martinsville, will attend Patrick Henry Community College. The Howard Stone Renewable Scholarship was
awarded to Marlana Gravely. Gravely is the daughter of Janis and Marvin Gravely of Martinsville and attends Old
Dominion University.

Additional renewable scholarships were also awarded to Sierra Carter and Amy Smith. Carter is the daughter of Janie and Wendell Carter of Axton and attends UNC-Chapel Hill. Smith is the daughter of Arlene and James Smith of Bassett and attends Shenandoah University.

Recipients of the Charity League scholarships were chosen by the Scholarship Committee on the basis of college plans, financial need, grade point average, community involvement and service and recommendations from their high school or college counselors.
