The Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County recently awarded 25 scholarships worth $1000.00 each to area high school graduates and college students.

The Dr. Samuel Newman Scholarships were awarded to Morgan Rachel Barker and Karyn Elizabeth Lovern. These scholarships were first given in 1976 in honor of the late Dr. Samuel Newman of Danville, who conducted pediatric clinics in Martinsville in the late 1930’s. Morgan is the daughter of Andrew and Donna Barker of Axton. She will attend The College of Willaim and Mary. Karyn is the daughter of Don and Sharon Lovern of Collinsville. She will attend Virginia Tech.

Brandon Wayne Hylton, son of Wayne Hylton of Martinsville was the recipient of the Virginia Walker Hamlet Scholarship. He will attend The University of Virginia.

The Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of deceased Charity League members, was awarded to Savannah C. Cox, daughter of Penny Cox of Martinsville. She will attend Radford University.

The Founders’ Scholarship, first given in 1976 in honor of the charter members of the Charity League, was awarded to Akrista Lattariyon Harris, daughter of Kenneth and Jackie Harris of Martinsville. She will attend Averett University.

The Sustainer Scholarship was given to James Lawson Souther, son of Brenda Souther of Ridgeway. He will attend Radford University.

The Blue Ridge Scholarship was awarded to Amy Louise Smith, daughter of James and Arlene Smith of Bassett. She will attend Shenandoah University.

The Adele Pannill Scholarship was awarded to Maribeth Michelle Jones, daughter of Keevin and Elizabeth Jones of Ridgeway. She will attend James Madison University.

The Catherine Pannill Scholarship was awarded to Jamie Marie Armstrong, daughter of Patti Armstrong of Martinsville. She will attend Lynchburg College.

The Adele Pannill Carter Charitable Trust Scholarships were awarded to Daisy Stefanie Altamirano, Joshua Daniel Skiles, Jessica Le-Ann Scales, and Katherine Anne Minter. Altamirano is the daughter of Antonio and Margarita Altamirano of Martinsville, and will attend Patrick Henry Community College. Skiles is the son of Joyce Skiles of Bassett, and he will attend The University of Virginia. Scales is the daughter of Roderick Adams and Yolanda Stanley of Martinsville, and will attend Elon College. Minter is the daughter of Anne Minter and Ronnie and Kim Minter of Martinsville, and will attend James Madison University University.

The Christine Yeaman Scholarship was awarded to Amanda May Washburn and Casey Louise Washburn, daughters of Anne Washburn of Martinsville. Both Washburns will attend Patrick Henry Community College.

In addition, others scholarships were awarded to Candace Marie Zola, daughter of Charles and Lucinda Adkins and Tim and Rhonda Zola of Axton. She will attend Patrick Henry Community College. Renee Despot, daughter of Karen Despot of Martinsville. She will attend Virginia Tech. Tara Elaine Martin, daughter of Tammy Cox, of Bassett. She will attend College of William and Mary. Schuyler Davon Adams, daughter of James and Peggy Adams of Axton, and will attend Hampton University. Ashlie N. Martin, daughter of Toni Martin of Bassett. She will attend Radford University. Jessica Nicole Underwood, daughter of Jeff Underwood of Collinsville. She will attend Patrick Henry Community College. Phillip Cristofer Lewis, son of Clifford and Christina Niblett of Martinsville. He will attend Clemson University.

The Howard Stone Renewable Scholarship, given in memory of Howard Stone, was awarded to George Lewis Sink, son of Perry and Laura Sink of Bassett. He is attending Virginia Tech.

In addition, two other renewable scholarships were awarded to the following recipients:

Marlana Renee Gravely, daughter of Marvin and Janis Gravely of Martinsville. She is attending Old Dominion University.

Sierra Elizabeth Carter, daughter of Wendell and Janie Carter of Martinsville. She is attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Recipients of these scholarships were chosen by the Charity League Scholarship Committee on the basis of college plans, financial need, grade point average, community involvement and recommendations from their high school or college guidance counselors.

The chairman of the 2008 scholarship committee is Mrs. Beverly Cecil.
