The Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County recently awarded 18 scholarships worth $1000.00 each to area high school graduates and college students.

The Dr. Samuel Newman Scholarships were awarded to Jonathan Crawford and Aleshia Monique Ferrell.  These scholarships were first given in 1976 in honor of the late Dr. Samuel Newman of Danville, who conducted pediatric clinics in Martinsville in the late 1930’s.  Jonathan is the son of Johnny & Regina Crawford of Fieldale.  He will attend Longwood University.  Aleshia is the daughter of Gracie & Kerry Lieteau of Bassett.  She will attend Jefferson College of Health Sciences.

Erica Lynn Walker, daughter of Ricky and Kerry Walker of Martinsville, VA was the recipient of the Virginia Walker Hamlet Scholarship.  She will attend James Madison University.

The Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of deceased Charity League members, was awarded to Tabitha Lynn Crouch, daughter of Donald and Lori Crouch of Dry Fork, VA.  She will attend Virginia Intermont College.

The Founders’ Scholarship, first given in 1976 in honor of the charter members of the Charity League, was awarded to Alicia Ramsey Fernandez, daughter of Marsha Fernandez and Adolfo Fernandez of Martinsville.  She will attend Meredith College.

The Sustainer Scholarship was given to Ricardo Jamar Bennett, son of Juanita Bennett of Ridgeway.  He will attend Bluefield College.

The Blue Ridge Scholarship was awarded to Jasetta Martina Perkins, daughter of James and Margaret Perkins of Axton.  She will attend James Madison University.

The Adele Pannill Scholarship was awarded to Telisha Venee’ Holland, daughter of James and Cecil Holland of Martinsville.  She will attend Virginia Wesleyan College.

The Catherine Pannill Scholarship was awarded to Amanda Lynn Allen, daughter of Virginia Layman of Fieldale.  She will attend Jefferson College of Health Sciences.

The Adele Pannill Carter Charitable Trust Scholarships were awarded to Ashley Renee Burnette, Trey Mitchell Craddock, Kendall Annette Craddock, and Bethany Lauren Jordan.  Burnette is the daughter of Roger and Ilene Burnette of Bassett, and will attend Ferrum College.  T. Craddock is the son of Zeke and Julie Craddock of Bassett, and he will attend East Tennessee State University.  K. Craddock is the daughter of David & Sharon Craddock of Spencer, and will attend The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.  Jordan is the daughter of Dwayne and Patricia Jordan of Martinsville, and will attend East Tennessee State University.

In addition, another scholarship was awarded to Mallory Dawn Martin, daughter of Sammy and April Martin of Ridgeway.  She will attend Campbell University.

The newly named Howard Stone Renewable Scholarship, given in memory of Howard Stone, was awarded to Justin Ryan Adams, son of Dean and Debbie Adams of Patrick Springs.  He is attending High Point University.

In addition, three other renewable scholarships were awarded to the following recipients:

  • Kerry Lynn Gravely, daughter of Marvin and Janis Gravely of Martinsville.  She is attending Virginia Commonwealth University.
  • Katherine Carter Gray, daughter of Bobby and Elizabeth Adams of Ridgeway.  She is attending Emory and Henry College.
  • Myra Susan Williams, daughter of T. Michael Williams and Lynn Metzger.  She is attending the University of Mary Washington.

Recipients of these scholarships were chosen by the Charity League Scholarship Committee on the basis of college plans, financial need, grade point average, community involvement and recommendations from their high school or college guidance counselors.

The chairman of the 2005 scholarship committee is Lee Anne Fuller.
